A man who stole a car in Mountain Home is in the Baxter County Detention Center after being arrested in Saline County following a foot pursuit there with a deputy. Forty-three-year-old James Andrew Caple of Mountain Home, who has 17 felony arrests dating back to 2002, is facing charges in both counties.

According to the probable cause affidavit from the Saline County Sheriff’s Office, on Oct. 23, a deputy came upon two vehicles on the shoulder of the road and believed it was an accident. When he got out to assist, Caple took off running, carrying what appeared to be a large knife. The deputy gave orders for Caple to stop, but he instead jumped a fence and dropped what was identified as a machete.

The deputy gave chase as they crossed all four lanes of Highway 167 and into a wooded area and into a ditch. The deputy deployed his taser, but it was unsuccessful due to the limbs and vines, with only one prong making contact in the shoulder area of Caple.

As Caple tried to go up an embankment, he slipped, allowing the deputy to grab him and take him into custody. Once he was in custody, it was determined the taser prong was stuck in multiple jackets and never made contact with Caple’s skin.

Once the deputy was able to run the plates on the car, he was able to determine it was stolen out of Mountain Home.

Caple was charged in Saline County with theft by receiving with a value between $5,000 and $25,000, carrying a weapon and fleeing on foot.

His case has already been adjudicated. Through a negotiated plea deal, Caple pled guilty to all of the charges, and was given one month in the Saline County Jail.

After being released, he was booked into the Baxter County Detention Center on a theft of property charge.

The probable cause affidavit from the Mountain Home Police Department indicates the victim reported her car taken from her residence on 10th Street in the early afternoon of Oct. 22. She had last seen it at 7:00 the night before.

Bond for Caple is set at $5,000.
