The Trout Management Program and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff have begun a year long study to track the movements of Brown Trout on the White River below Bull Shoals Dam.

Last month, university personnel surgically implanted 100 Brown Trout with radio transmitters between Bull Shoals Dam and the Buffalo River. Researchers will monitor the fish to determine how far and when they move, including whether they enter major tributaries such as the Buffalo River, Crooked Creek, or Norfork Tailwater.

The study aims to inform regulations for Brown Trout and their use of catch-and-release areas. It will also help scientists evaluate whether environmental factors, including changes in temperature and water flow, influence trout movement.

Anglers who catch a tagged trout are asked not to remove the transmitters if releasing the fish. Those who legally harvest a tagged trout are asked to report the catch, including the location and date.

Updates on the study will be provided as it progresses.
