The 700-acre Math Branch Fire in the Swan Creek Non-Motorized Area is approximately 70% contained, according to fire officials. The fire was reported Saturday, Jan. 3. The cause remains under investigation. Full containment is expected by the end of the week.

Firefighting activities are continuing to ensure the fire remains within established containment lines. For firefighter and public safety, officials urge the public to avoid the fire area. Hiking in the Swan Creek Non-Motorized Area is highly discouraged until further notice. Updates will be posted on the agency’s website.

Officials note that containment means the fire is expected to stay within boundaries created by firefighters, though it is still burning inside those lines. Smoke and, at times, flames may remain visible as the fire burns through heavy downed fuels, including fallen trees.

The fire may continue to burn in some areas until available fuel is consumed or significant rainfall occurs. Firefighters will continue monitoring conditions and will respond as needed to ensure the fire stays within containment boundaries. Crews will also remove fire-weakened trees along roads and trails that could pose a safety hazard.

Once the fire is fully extinguished and all fire-related hazards are addressed, the fire will be declared out.
