Fred Berry Center to host annual AGFC Big Squirrel Challenge

The Fred Berry Crooked Creek Nature Center in Yellville will be one of the official weigh-in locations for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s (AGFC) fifth annual Umarex Big Squirrel Challenge, set for Friday and Saturday.The statewide squirrel hunting competition encourages hunters of all ages to spend time outdoors while taking part in a friendly contest that highlights one of Arkansas’s most popular small-game seasons.

Hunters may begin hunting at noon Friday, and must be in line with their harvest by noon Saturday at one of the designated weigh-in sites. At the Yellville location, participants will bring their squirrels to the Fred Berry Crooked Creek Nature Center, located at 851 Conservation Lane off Highway 62/412.

KTLO News spoke with facility manager at the Fred Berry Crooked Creek Nature Center, Heather Pitman, who shares more about the event.

Teams of two hunters are encouraged, with divisions for adult teams and youth teams, though solo hunters may also participate. Hunters may harvest the daily legal limit, but only the three largest squirrels will be weighed for competition purposes. Categories include fox squirrels, gray squirrels and mixed bags.

Medals will be awarded for first and second place finishers in each category at each weigh-in location, with top teams statewide also receiving Umarex air rifles. All participants who weigh in a squirrel will be eligible for door prizes at their location.

There is no preregistration or entry fee required. Squirrels must be field-dressed with the skin left on before weighing.

In addition to the Yellville site, another nearby weigh in location will be open at the Ponca Nature Center in Newton County.
