Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) has introduced legislation aimed at accelerating the deportation of noncitizens convicted of crimes.
The Deportation Acceleration Act would make any noncitizen convicted of a felony or two misdemeanors automatically deportable, according to a statement from Cotton’s office.
“Migrants who threaten the safety of Arkansans by not respecting our laws don’t belong here,” Cotton said. “My bill will ensure these criminals are swiftly deported.”
The legislation would require state and local law enforcement to report criminal convictions to the Department of Homeland Security, shorten appeal windows in removal cases, and allow federal transportation funding to be withheld from sanctuary jurisdictions.
It also authorizes DHS to distribute $150 million annually in grants to compliant states and local governments for detention capacity, officer training, and enforcement equipment.
