Shannon scores 26 as Arkansas State tops Southern Miss 81-71

Senior guard Zyion Shannon scored 26 points to lead Arkansas State to an 81-71 win over Southern Miss on Saturday afternoon at First National Bank Arena.

The Red Wolves improved to 16-4 overall and 7-1 in Sun Belt play, marking the program’s best 20-game start in a decade. Arkansas State limited Southern Miss to 36 percent shooting and just 1-of-18 from three-point range.

Shannon added six rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Mimi McCollister finished with 11 points and Mia Tarver added 10. Wynter Rogers chipped in eight points, a team-high nine rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

Arkansas State used a strong third quarter to build a double-digit lead and sealed the win at the free-throw line down the stretch. The Red Wolves made seven of eight foul shots in the final minutes to pull away.

Arkansas State continues its homestand Wednesday, hosting Old Dominion at 11 at First National Bank Arena.
