The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) is gearing up for a potentially significant statewide winter weather event expected to begin Friday afternoon. The storm is forecast to bring heavy snowfall, sleet, freezing rain, and ice.ARDOT began the year with 78,000 cubic yards of salt stored across 121 salt houses statewide. Crews also have 700 snowplows and 600 salt spreaders ready to respond.

“Our crews are prepared and ready to face the incoming winter storm,” said ARDOT State Maintenance Engineer Deric Wyatt. “Crews will begin pretreating roads and bridges today and will begin 24-hour operations on Friday with 12-hour shifts. We’re closely monitoring conditions across the entire state and will be ready for whatever this weather system brings.”

During winter weather events, ARDOT activates its Strike Team, approximately 75 employees from statewide maintenance crews, to assist district teams in clearing highways and interstates.

ARDOT strongly recommends that the public stay home during inclement weather if possible. If travel is necessary, check IDriveArkansas.com for the latest road conditions. Travelers should reduce speeds, remain alert, and carry essentials such as an ice scraper, bottled water, phone charger, and warm clothing.
