Missouri State forward Michael Osei-Bonsu was named Conference USA Player of the Week on Monday, becoming the Bears’ first men’s basketball player to earn the honor since joining the league.
The senior from Bolingbrook, Illinois, averaged 19.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 63.6 percent from the field to lead Missouri State to road victories over New Mexico State and UTEP.
Osei-Bonsu scored 21 points with nine rebounds in Thursday’s win at New Mexico State, then followed with 17 points, nine rebounds and the game-winning layup with 12 seconds remaining in Saturday’s victory at UTEP. The performances helped the Bears complete season sweeps of both teams and move into sole possession of second place in the Conference USA standings.
He now has six 20-point games this season and leads Conference USA in field goal percentage at 60 percent, ranking 29th nationally. Osei-Bonsu is the second Missouri State player to earn a weekly CUSA award this season, joining Trey Williams Jr., who was named Freshman of the Week on Jan. 5.
