The shooting occurred Monday, Jan. 26, at about 12:38 p.m. at the Dollar General store located at 412 N. Washington.
According to a preliminary incident report, officers found the victim inside his vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper abdomen and lower back. The victim told police he did not know who the shooter was.
Police said officers reviewed store security footage and observed a suspect entering the store wearing a black and gray coat, khaki pants and black water boots that stopped below the knee. The suspect was seen walking through the store “like he was looking for something or someone,” according to the report.
The suspect later went to the front of the store, where the victim approached him. Police said the two appeared to exchange words before the suspect pulled a black handgun from the left side of his pants and fired at the victim.
The suspect then fled the store, running toward Dillard Street.
At the scene, officers recovered a 9 mm shell casing and found bullet holes inside the store.
A witness told police the suspect and the victim were arguing and that the suspect told the victim to remove his mask before pulling the gun and firing, according to the report.
