The University of Arkansas Board of Trustees on Thursday approved Dr. C. Lowry Barnes as the next permanent chancellor of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, the state’s only academic medical center.
Barnes, a professor and chair of the UAMS Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, has served as interim chancellor since July. He was one of four finalists in a national search and was recommended for the role by UA System President Jay B. Silveria during a specially called meeting at the system’s Cammack Campus in Little Rock.
A fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, Barnes specializes in hip and knee joint reconstruction and replacement. He joined UAMS in 2014, was named to the Carl L. Nelson, M.D. Distinguished Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2017, and is founding director of The Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital at UAMS, which opened in 2023. Barnes also directs the Musculoskeletal Service Line at UAMS Health.
Silveria cited Barnes’ long service to UAMS and commitment to advancing education, research and patient care across Arkansas. Barnes said he plans to focus on growth, cultural improvements and patient-centered service as UAMS continues expanding its clinical, research and educational missions.
Internationally recognized in joint replacement surgery, Barnes has published more than 350 peer-reviewed articles, lectures worldwide and holds seven patents for orthopaedic devices. A UAMS medical school graduate, he completed orthopaedic training at UAMS and a fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. He previously led Arkansas Specialty Orthopaedics and has served as president of several national and regional orthopaedic organizations, including the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
