Arkansas State falls at Georgia Southern

Arkansas State’s bid for sole possession of first place in the Sun Belt Conference was halted Wednesday afternoon with a 69-60 road loss to Georgia Southern at Hanner Fieldhouse.The Red Wolves (20-6, 11-2 Sun Belt) were led by Crislyn Rose and Zyion Shannon with 11 points apiece. Rose added four assists, and Wynter Rogers grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Georgia Southern (18-6, 11-2) shot 47% from the field (24 of 51), while Arkansas State managed 31% (20 of 65). The Eagles also held a 39-36 edge on the boards. The Red Wolves forced 22 turnovers but committed 15 of their own.

Arkansas State fell behind early as Georgia Southern opened the game on an 11-0 run and extended its advantage to 27-9 late in the first half. The Eagles led 39-24 at the break.

The Red Wolves rallied in the third quarter, hitting four 3-pointers during an 18-4 run to trim the deficit to three points. Georgia Southern answered with a 7-0 surge and carried an 11-point lead into the fourth.

Arkansas State was unable to close the gap in the final period as the Eagles maintained control down the stretch.

The Red Wolves continue their road trip Saturday at Marshall.
