
Mountain Home crowned a state champion and produced four All-State finishers at the 5A State Wrestling Championships held Friday and Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center on the campus of UA Little Rock.
Junior Calin Frounfelter captured the 5A heavyweight title, defeating Beebe’s D.J. Eckert by fall in 5:55 in the championship match. Frounfelter pinned his way through the bracket to complete a dominant tournament run.
Senior Mason Shimmel finished as state runner-up at 144 pounds. Shimmel advanced to the finals with a fall and a major decision before dropping the championship bout to Lake Hamilton’s Caddo Gilmore.
Senior Seth King earned a third-place finish at 126 pounds to secure All-State honors, closing his career with a 3-1 tournament record that included a technical fall and two decisions. King defeated Little Rock Christian’s Lennox Smith 5-4 in the third-place match.
Senior Steven Sturges also reached the podium, placing fourth at 190 pounds. Sturges went 2-2 in the tournament with both wins coming by fall before falling to Searcy’s Benjamin O’Connell in the consolation finals.
Four additional Bombers competed at the state meet. Sophomore Kaden Looney (120 pounds), sophomore Corbin Lefevers (165), junior Mak Smith (175) and junior Eason Recktenwald (215) each finished 1-2, falling one win shy of All-State recognition.
Eight Mountain Home wrestlers qualified for the tournament.
