The Baxter County Coroner’s Office has a new employee, but this employee has four legs and a tail. Kairos is a cadaver dog that has joined the coroner’s office and it’s believed he is the only cadaver dog in Arkansas, or will be when he is fully trained. Baxter County Coroner Sam Seamans made the announcement this week. He says it was the idea of Chief Deputy Coroner Sara Fischer to add Kairos to the team.

Kairos is a long haired German Sheppard that is 11 1/2 weeks old. Fischer will train Kairos herself, saving the county thousands of dollars. Fischer also purchased the dog herself.

She says cadaver dogs can be certified in many levels including searching homes, disaster areas and water ways. Fischer says she would like to get Kairos certified for everything.

Fischer says they know there are no other cadaver dogs locally and believes Kairos is the only cadaver dog in Arkansas. She has heard from law enforcement agencies who have had to call in cadaver dogs in the past from as far away as Mississippi. They hope having a cadaver dog locally can help not only the Baxter County Coroner’s Office, but neighboring counties.

Seamans remembers when the tornado hit Gassville back 2008 and how helpful a cadaver dog would’ve been.

Fischer has trained a couple of cadaver dogs and will handle the training for Kairos. She says it’s amazing what they can do and how strong their sense of smell is.

Fischer says she there is a misconception that cadaver dogs get depressed because they only find people who have died. She says that is not the case.
