Arkansas freshman Darius Acuff Jr. has been named SEC Player of the Week for the eighth time this season, becoming the first player in league history to earn the honor that many times.
Acuff averaged 34.5 points, 5.0 assists, and 4.5 rebounds in games at No. 25 Alabama and versus Missouri to claim the award.
The performance at Alabama was historic. Acuff scored 49 points in a 117-115 double-overtime loss, hitting a three-pointer with 12 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and playing all 50 minutes while committing just one turnover. The 49-point effort was the most in NCAA history by a freshman against a top-25 opponent, the most by any Razorback in an SEC game, and the second-most points by any Division I player this season. Acuff shot 16-of-27 from the field, 6-of-10 from three, and 11-of-12 from the free throw line.
Against Missouri, Acuff scored 20 points with five assists and zero turnovers, extending his streak of consecutive 20-point games to eight tying the best such streak by a Razorback since Corliss Williamson in 1993-94.
Acuff now leads the SEC in scoring at 22.19 points per game and assists at 6.19 per game, making him the only player in the NCAA averaging at least 20 points and 6.0 assists this season. He also leads the SEC in assist-turnover ratio and in both scoring and assists in conference-only games.
With 599 points on the season, Acuff has already broken the Arkansas freshman scoring record previously held by Scotty Thurman.
The Razorbacks return to action Wednesday at home against Texas A&M. Tipoff in Bud Walton Arena is set for 8 on ESPN2.
