A West Plains man charged with two counts of rape appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court/Criminal Division Monday.
Thirty-eight-year-old Corey Cauthen entered a plea of not guilty to the charges against him.
A Little Rock attorney, Eugene Clifford, appeared for Cauthen and said he would present evidence to the court showing that Cauthen could not have done what he is accused of.
The attorney told the court the evidence he had gathered showed there was a “zero percent chance” that Cauthen was guilty as charged.
He said he had a “plethora of witnesses who will say he did not do this.”
As with most sex-related cases, the court has sealed the record to prevent the release of details surrounding the incidents.
The statute Cauthen is charged under is one in which the rape is alleged to have involved a person incapable of consent, with a person 14-years-old or a minor in which the accused was in a position of trust or specific family relationship.
The defense asked that Cauthen’s bond be lowered to $50,000, the state asked for $100,000 and Circuit Judge Andrew Bailey set the bond at $75,000. Cauthen will also be required to wear an ankle monitor and have no contact with the victim or the victim’s family.
When Cauthen was initially booked on the charges, his bond was set at slightly more than $250,000.
