Two deputies wounded in a gunfight near Reeds Spring earlier this week remain hospitalized as Christian County prepares to bury two officers killed in the same incident.

Deputy Josh Wahl of the Christian County Sheriff’s Office and Deputy Austin McCall of the Webster County Sheriff’s Office were both seriously injured in Tuesday morning’s shooting.

Deputy McCall suffered four gunshot wounds. Webster County Sheriff Roye Cole, who has visited McCall every day since the shooting, described his deputy as brave, quick-witted, and the kind of person who makes everyone around him feel better.

“That’s the kind of people we need in the world,” Sheriff Cole said.

Deputy Wahl was shot in the upper leg and has undergone surgery. Christian County Sheriff Brad Cole said Wahl is recovering well but faces limited mobility.

“He’s underwent a pretty major surgery, reconstruction, and he is kind of limited on his movement at this point in time,” Sheriff Brad Cole said, adding that Wahl has spent his recovery focused on the wellbeing of others rather than himself.

Both sheriffs pledged continued support for their deputies through recovery.

“There will be non-stop, continued support for him. We will make sure that he has what he needs for, hopefully, a full recovery,” Sheriff Brad Cole said.
