Heavy smoke observed in Mountain Home from controlled burn south of town

Smoke from a controlled burn in southern Baxter County and neighboring Stone County is impacting visibility Saturday across Mountain Home and portions of the Twin Lakes Area Saturday morning.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the prescribed burn is being conducted within the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest west of Calico Rock. The operation is taking place in the Sylamore Ranger District within an area identified as the Rorie North burn block and remains in progress.

Forest Service officials report approximately 2,305 acres are being treated as part of the operation.

The prescribed burn is intended to reduce hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat and help control insects and disease within the forest ecosystem.

Smoke from the burn has drifted into surrounding communities residents reporting the smoke overnight into Saturday morning throughout Mountain Home and nearby areas.
