
Arkansas State finished off a season sweep of in-state opponent Arkansas-Pine Bluff with a 7-2 victory Sunday at Tomlinson StadiumSlayton Family Field.
The Red Wolves improved to 9-3, while the Golden Lions fell to 4-9.
Arkansas State struck first in the opening inning using plate discipline, drawing two walks and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases before another hit batter forced in a run. Pine Bluff tied the game in the second inning after capitalizing on a fielding error.
Evan Griffis put A-State back in front with a home run to center field. Raul Torres later delivered a two-run single to extend the lead, and Lane Waltons fourth-inning triple set up an RBI single by Patrick Engskov to make it 5-1.
The Red Wolves added two more runs in the fifth inning. Derek Martinez singled through the middle, Torres followed with a double, and Joey McLaughlin III drove both runners home with a line drive single to right.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff hit a solo home run in the sixth but managed no further offense. Tyler Weimer closed the game with three perfect innings, striking out three to earn his first career save.
Cooper Garrison picked up the win after allowing one run on two hits over three innings of relief. Kenny Fabian took the loss for the Golden Lions.
Arkansas State will begin a road trip Tuesday with a 6 p.m. game at Louisiana Tech.
