A Harrison man is free on bond after leading a Baxter County deputy on a high-speed chase that nearly ended in a head-on collision.

33-year-old Dillon Kelly is charged with fleeing by vehicle or conveyance, first-degree reckless driving, speeding in excess of 15 miles per hour over the limit, and improper passing on the left.

A Baxter County Sheriff’s deputy was traveling southbound on Highway 126 North around 7:14 p.m. when radar clocked a northbound truck at 80 miles per hour in a 55 zone. After passing the deputy, the truck accelerated further. The deputy activated his lights and sirens and gave chase.

During the pursuit, the driver crossed into the southbound lane to pass another vehicle, nearly causing a head-on collision and forcing the other driver to slam on the brakes. The truck then turned onto Highway 5 North before pulling into a driveway at 6036 Highway 5 North and stopping.

Kelly was ordered out of the vehicle and taken into custody. When asked why he ran, Kelly was straightforward.

“I’m not sure why, it was a dumb choice. I was just trying to outrun you enough to try and turn down a side road and get away,” Kelly said.

Kelly was transported to the Baxter County Jail and has since been released on $1,310 bond.
