The Arkansas Activities Association has announced disciplinary action following an altercation at the conclusion of the 2A Boys State Tournament contest between Barton and England High Schools.
According to the AAA, an initial investigation determined that five members of the Barton High School basketball team were ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct under association regulations. Those student-athletes will be ineligible to compete in the upcoming 2A Boys State Championship game.
Seven members of the England basketball team were also ejected following the incident.
AAA Executive Director Lance Taylor said the actions at the end of the contest were unacceptable and do not reflect the values of education-based athletics.
“What happened at the end of the contest between Barton and England was unacceptable and does not reflect the values of education-based athletics,” Taylor said. “We have gone through every second of the incident, from multiple angles, to identify any student-athlete, school personnel, or community member involved in the altercation. Any team member who engaged in an unsportsmanlike act, or instigated an altercation, has been ejected.”
The AAA said it remains committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for participants and spectators. The investigation remains open, and the association says additional disciplinary actions could be issued if new evidence becomes available.
Officials also noted that many individuals from both Barton and England attempted to de-escalate the situation. The AAA says it supports the Grant County Sheriff’s Office decision to open a criminal investigation and will cooperate fully.
