ASUMH sweeps North Arkansas College in doubleheader

The Arkansas State University–Mountain Home Trailblazers picked up a pair of wins over North Arkansas College on Thursday, using late offense in one game and an early scoring surge in the other.

In the opener, ASUMH rallied late to claim a 3-2 victory. The game was tied at two in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jett Hannaford grounded out to drive in the go-ahead run.

Keaton Matlick delivered a strong performance on the mound, striking out 12 batters while allowing three hits and two runs over seven innings without issuing a walk.

North Arkansas College opened the scoring in the sixth inning with a two-run home run, but the Trailblazers responded in the bottom half of the inning. Broc Mattox tied the game with a two-run homer before Hannaford’s groundout plated the eventual winning run.

Mattox led ASUMH with two RBIs in the game, while Chase Plowman, Brayden Feather and Rylan Jones each recorded two hits.

The Trailblazers completed the sweep with an 8-6 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

ASUMH jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Mattox hit a three-run home run to center field and Hannaford followed with an RBI single to make it 5-0. The Trailblazers added two more runs in the second inning on a single by Gabe Flores to extend the lead to 7-0.

Hannaford added a solo home run in the seventh inning as ASUMH built an 8-1 advantage before North Arkansas College rallied late with several runs, including a home run in the eighth.

Sloan Foster earned the win for the Trailblazers, pitching five innings without allowing a hit or a run while striking out six and walking one. Joven Bell, Carson Tosh, Logan Myer and Rylan Jones all made relief appearances.

ASUMH collected nine hits in the second game, with JD Hertzog, Hannaford and Mattox each recording two hits. Hannaford and Mattox both drove in three runs.

ASUMH is scheduled to face North Arkansas College again Saturday on the road.
