A Stone County man was killed Friday afternoon when he was run over by his own truck at a boat ramp. The Stone County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim as 62-year-old Vincent Lafon Rutledge of rural Mountain View.
According to the incident report, deputies were called to the Martin Access boat ramp along the White River in the Marcella area southeast of Mountain View shortly after 2:00 Friday afternoon. When deputies arrived, the victim had already been transported to a landing zone to be airlifted to a hospital.
A deputy spoke with a man who was with Rutledge at the time of the accident who said Rutledge was backing his boat down the ramp but was having mechanical problems with his truck, saying the gear shift was loose. Rutledge parked the truck, put a rock under a tire and crawled under the truck to work on it. But as Rutledge was performing the work, the truck rolled over the rock and onto him. The man who was with Rutledge was in the boat at the time of the accident. He jumped out and got in the truck, got it back into park and called for help.
After getting the man’s statement, the deputy went to the landing zone to check on Rutledge and learned he had died at the scene.
