The Mountain Home Lions Club is inviting the community to take part in a creative new event aimed at promoting recycling while bringing families together for outdoor fun.
The club’s inaugural Recycle Regatta Jug Boat Race will be held April 25 at Buzzard Roost Boat Dock. The event challenges participants to design and build boats using recycled plastic jugs before racing them on a short course on the lake.

Organizer Carolyn Chentnick says the event is designed to raise awareness about recycling while encouraging younger generations to get involved through a hands-on activity.

The race will feature 10 divisions for different age groups and team formats, allowing children, teens, adults and mixed-age teams to compete. Top prize for each division is a kayak.

In addition to race winners, organizers will present awards for categories including most creative use of recycled materials, best team spirit and a “Titanic” sinking award.
Lions Club President Lee Belicek says this event is one way the organization is able to give back to the community.

Jug donation bins will be located at Baxter Day Service Recycling Center and both Harps locations in Mountain Home. The public is invited to donate rinsed, screw top jugs of all sizes for participants to pick up.
The event is free to enter and will be limited to 50 racers. After the races, boats will be dismantled and recycled, completing the event’s full recycling theme.
Participants can register online at mountainhomelions.org, where race rules, registration forms and instructions on how to build a jug boat are available. Buzzard Roost Boat Dock is located at 4769 Buzzard Roost Rd.
