A Batesville woman faces a felony animal cruelty charge after police say she attacked a dog with an axe.Gretchen Hines, 34, is being held on a $100,000 bond in the Independence County Detention Center after a judge found probable cause Thursday to charge her with aggravated cruelty to a dog, cat or equine, a Class D felony.

According to an affidavit, officers with the Batesville Police Department were called March 18 to a residence on Lawson Drive in reference to a woman striking a dog with an axe.

Corporal Miguel Romero responded and found Hines attempting to leave the scene. He detained her at that time.

While detained, Hines reportedly made statements indicating she did not want to return to jail, had forgotten to take her medication, and experienced a “PTSD moment” where she blacked out, according to court documents. She told officers the dog was not dead but “just severely injured” and was being taken to a veterinarian.

According to the affidavit, Hines later told officers she arrived home to find her residence in disarray and said she tripped over her dogs. She stated she blacked out and began striking the animals with a hatchet that had a holster cover, which broke during the incident.

Officers located the injured dog on steps at the apartment complex, where bystanders were tending to it. An animal control officer transported the dog to a local veterinary clinic, where it is expected to undergo surgery.

Officer Hightower reported that photographs of the dog showed “three large, gaping lacerations” with exposed muscle tissue. The report stated the wounds were consistent with a hatchet blade and would have caused significant and prolonged pain.

During the investigation, Hines’ boyfriend told officers she called him and said she had “chopped up the dog,” according to the affidavit.

Police also spoke with another woman who said Hines contacted her, stated she had “messed up and went into a rage,” admitted to striking the dog with an axe, and asked to be taken to a mental health facility.
