A 4-year-old child was seriously injured in a dog attack Sunday morning in Hempstead County.According to the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 11:17 to Northwest North Street in Washington, where they found the child with severe injuries. Emergency medical personnel transported the juvenile to Arkansas Children’s Hospital for treatment, including an air evacuation.

Investigators say the dog involved did not have up-to-date vaccinations.

Deputies ordered the owner to secure the animal for quarantine and evaluation, but the dog became aggressive again and attacked an adult, causing additional injuries.

A deputy then shot and killed the dog, citing a threat to public safety. No further injuries were reported.

The animal has been taken to a veterinary clinic for rabies testing, with results pending.

The injured adult was treated at a local medical facility.

Authorities say the dog’s owner has been cited for violating a county ordinance related to harboring a vicious animal. A court date has been set.
