The Arkansas Department of Agriculture is urging residents to remain alert as wildfire danger has increased significantly across the state.

Officials say the entire state is under a high wildfire risk through March 29, with more than half of Arkansas counties currently under burn bans. The elevated threat is being driven by above-average temperatures, ongoing drought conditions and increased winds.

At this level, fires can ignite easily and spread rapidly, becoming difficult to control. Authorities warn that unattended brush fires and campfires are especially likely to escape containment.

The department is advising residents to avoid all outdoor burning and activities involving open flames, including campfires, trash burning and grilling. Officials also recommend using caution when operating vehicles or equipment in dry areas and properly disposing of cigarettes.

Fires or smoke should be reported immediately by calling 1-800-468-8834 or contacting local authorities.

So far this year, forestry crews have responded to 675 wildfires that have burned more than 15,000 acres across Arkansas, with more than 40% of those fires occurring in March.
