A former Mountain Home High School football coach and teacher was recently honored on a Springfield television station for his military service. Perry Brantly was interviewed on KYTV March 18 during the show “The Place” and also was part of a commercial for the Chevy Dealers of the Ozarks receiving a $500 check.Brantly was with the Mountain Home school district from 1980 until he retired in 2003. During his time at the high school, he taught American history, world history and geography. He coached football, including two years as the head coach in 1989 and 1990, and also coached track.
Prior to Mountain Home, Brantly taught and coached in Stamps, Pocahontas and one year in Texas.
Brantly is originally from Homer, Louisiana. He says he joined the Navy in 1962.
When he finished his training, he was sent to Okinawa for 20 months. He returned to Camp Pendleton, but things in Vietnam were heating up and Brantly soon found himself headed there.
Brantly says there is one night from the Vietnam War that stands out to him when his battalion was called out to help rescue a South Vietnamese army post that had been run over the night before by the North Vietnamese Regulars.
Brantly has visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. twice, including a trip with his wife, daughter and granddaughter a few years ago. He says seeing the memorial is a very impactful experience.
Brantly says he is donating the $500 check he received from the Chevy dealers of the Ozarks to his church. His wife Vicki works with women who are in jail and the money will be used to buy bibles for that program.
