From The KY3 Newsroom: Thousands gathered for a fundraiser to support the families of the two Christian County deputies who were killed and the two other deputies who were wounded in late February.
Event organizer Heather Davis said she started planning a fundraiser almost as soon as she heard about the deputies killed and injured in late February south of Highlandville. She said that through local support, the event came together quickly.
“Over $100,000 in food, goods, services, stages, bands, tents, tables, you name it. Everything was 100% donated. I got zero no’s, not one no,” Davis said. “And then on top of that, it was almost $100,000 in auction items. And so, all this came together. We were 100% funded in three weeks’ time.”
Over 2,000 people gathered at the Ozark Mountain Sports Complex to support the families of deputies Ramirez and Hislope, who died, and deputies McCall and Wahl, who were wounded.
Davis said the fundraiser addresses immediate needs for the injured officers.
“We have immediate needs right now for our two injured officers, especially that the math doesn’t work. And so, what we were doing to bridge this gap… I don’t want anybody to think this was a one-and-done,” Davis said. “It’s not. I put my 10 cents in the offering plate, and I’m out. I wash my hands. That is not the case.”
King Block, who helped with the fundraiser, said the event hit close to home.
“It just hit really close to home. I have a ten-year-old and an eight-year-old. And these guys look after my kids,” Block said.
Block said he was proud of how the community came together.
“We are so blessed. Nobody even offered a no. I mean, it was like, how can we help? And wish we could help more. And what else do you need? And those types of things,” Block said.
People can still donate to help the families through the Christian County 100 Club, which supports the families of the fallen deputies, or the Christian County Deputy Sheriff’s Organization, which supports both the fallen deputies’ families and the wounded deputies.
