Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has announced a new initiative aimed at expanding outdoor recreation opportunities in Central Arkansas.

The Maumelle Pinnacles Master Plan outlines a long-term vision connecting more than 24,000 acres from downtown Little Rock to Lake Sylvia, including areas such as Pinnacle Mountain State Park, Rattlesnake Ridge, Blue Mountain and Lake Maumelle.

Sanders said the project is part of the state’s Natural State Initiative, which focuses on growing Arkansas’ outdoor economy and improving access to natural resources.

Officials say the plan will create a network of trails, access points and outdoor experiences while protecting key areas, including the Lake Maumelle watershed, a primary drinking water source for Central Arkansas.

The project is a partnership involving the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism, Central Arkansas Water, The Nature Conservancy and other local and regional groups.

State officials say work on the plan is already underway, with new trail development and connectivity projects in progress.
