Area teams see big wins, shutouts in Thursday action

It was a busy Thursday across the area on the baseball diamond, with several teams turning in strong performances.Flippin improved to 11-3 on the season with a dominant 13-0 win over Jasper, handing the Pirates just their second loss of the year. Valley Springs also kept things rolling, moving to 14-2 with a 9-1 victory over Cave City.

Elsewhere, Viola fell to Hillcrest 4-2, while Bakersfield bounced back to defeat Hillcrest 6-2. Izard County’s matchup with Sloan-Hendrix was postponed.

In softball, Viola handed Norfork its first loss of the season with a 5-1 win.

Viola jumped out early with a run in the first and took the lead for good in the fifth on an RBI single from Cheyenne Newberry.

Avery Rogers led the way in the circle with a complete game, allowing just one hit and one unearned run while striking out 12.

With the win, the Lady Longhorns improve to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in conference. Norfork drops to 5-1.

Marshall came up short against Cedar Ridge, falling 23-0, while Harrison picked up a 12-2 win over Shiloh Christian.
