The visitor center at Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area in northwest Arkansas has been renamed to honor former Arkansas Gov. David Pryor, two years after his death.

Pryor was instrumental in the state’s acquisition of the land that now makes up the park. The property was purchased from the Hobbs Estate Trustees and became part of Arkansas’s state park system in 1979 after approval by the Arkansas General Assembly.

During a ceremony marking the renaming, Pryor’s son reflected on his father’s lifelong commitment to conservation and public access to the outdoors.

“Many of you all remember that Arkansas folks keep Arkansas beautiful. In fact, it seems like those four years for brother David and I and our younger brother, Scott, it was like this never-ending tour of Arkansas to go visit the state parks, to go fishing and canoeing and just to remind people that this great state belongs to them,” he said.

Pryor served one term as governor beginning in 1974 before going on to represent Arkansas in the U.S. Senate for 18 years. He died at the age of 89.
