Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks due to a gearshift problem that could lead to a sudden downshift and possible loss of vehicle control.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue involves a potential signal loss between the transmission range sensor and the powertrain control module. Officials say the malfunction could cause the vehicle to unexpectedly shift into second gear while driving.

The recall affects six-speed F-150 models produced between March 12, 2014, and August 18, 2017.

Ford reports 444 warranty claims, along with more than 200 field and customer service reports tied to the issue. Two injuries and one accident have also been reported as potentially related.

Notification letters are expected to be mailed to affected owners beginning April 27. Repairs will be available free of charge at Ford or Lincoln dealerships.

Owners with questions can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. The NHTSA recall number is 26V237.
