A recent earthquake in southeast Missouri is drawing attention to activity along the New Madrid Seismic Zone.According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Pemiscot County on Thursday and was felt across multiple states, including parts of the Mid-South.

Researchers with the Center for Earthquake Research and Information report the quake is one of the strongest recorded in the New Madrid zone in recent years. The seismic zone experiences frequent smaller earthquakes, though events of this magnitude occur less often.

Data from monitoring equipment in the region is being analyzed to better understand seismic activity within the fault system. Officials say recent activity includes approximately 20 earthquakes recorded in the zone over the past three weeks.

Experts indicate the current level of seismic activity is not unusual but note the earthquake serves as a reminder that the region remains an active seismic area.

An aftershock survey is underway, and smaller aftershocks may be felt in the coming days.
