An 18-year-old who had attended Yellville-Summit High School showed up at graduation Friday night with a gun and was arrested. Trenton Ross was arrested without incident and, according to Superintendent Wes Henderson, the graduation ceremony was held without delay.
According to the probable cause affidavit from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy arrived at the school’s gymnasium about 6:30 Friday evening and met with the school’s resource officer who handed him a handgun. The resource officer told the deputy Ross had brought the gun into the gym during the graduation. Ross was searched, and while he did not have any other weapons, he did have a clip-on handgun holster on his right hip.

During questioning, Ross told the deputy a friend had given him the gun before the graduation and he did not have a safe place to put the firearm.

The affidavit says Henderson was told Ross possibly had a gun by a school board member. The superintendent took Ross into the coach’s office in the gym and questioned him about it. Ross denied it at first, but school officials located the gun on his person.

Ross is facing a felony charge of possession of a gun on school property. He is being held in the Marion County Detention Center with bond set at $75,000.

The school district had a social media post Friday night praising the quick response by law enforcement to keep everyone safe and allowing them to proceed with the graduation ceremony.
