
The sixth-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks men’s golf closed strong Monday to move into a tie for second place after the opening round of the NCAA Corvallis Regional in Oregon.
Arkansas finished the day at 9-under-par 275, tied with SEC rival Oklahoma Sooners men’s golf. Purdue leads the 13-team field at 12-under-par.
The Razorbacks surged late by playing the final six holes at 7-under par after sitting as low as eighth place earlier in the round.
Brad McMakin said he was proud of the way the team responded during the opening round.
Three Razorbacks John Daly II, Erich Fortlage and Gerardo Gomez are tied for seventh individually after each shot 3-under-par 68s.
Daly birdied three of his final six holes, while Fortlage finished with birdies on holes 16 and 17. Gomez played much of the round bogey-free before closing with a birdie on 16.
Cam Smith finished even par at 71, while Thomas Curry shot 2-over-par 73.
The top five teams after Wednesdays final round will advance to the NCAA Championship.
Round two of the regional is scheduled for Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Oregon.
