This week, Arkansas Treasurer John Thurston sat down with KTLO News to talk about the Arkansas Brighter Futures 529 College Savings Plan a program helping families save for their children’s future education.
Listen:
Treasurer Thurston says one of the biggest updates to the plan is flexibility savings can now be used not only for college but also for trade schools and vocational training programs.
Listen:
For families who think their child might take a different path, the program allows funds to be transferred tax-free to another family member who is going to college, or even used toward student loan debt, rolled into a Roth IRA or ABLE account.
The program is easy to start, requiring as little as $25 to open an account. Thurston says even small monthly contributions can add up over time thanks to compounding growth.
