Treasurer Thurston says one of the biggest updates to the plan is flexibility — savings can now be used not only for college but also for trade schools and vocational training programs.

For families who think their child might take a different path, the program allows funds to be transferred tax-free to another family member who is going to college, or even used toward student loan debt, rolled into a Roth IRA or ABLE account.

The program is easy to start, requiring as little as $25 to open an account. Thurston says even small monthly contributions can add up over time thanks to compounding growth.
