Students at Calico Rock Schools are gaining hands-on, real-world experience through partnerships with the Calico Rock Museum that aim to bring history and art to life. High school EAST students are working alongside museum staff to develop motion-activated sound effects for exhibits, as well as incorporating new technology into the museum’s immersive galleries.
“Our visitors love going back in time and walking into our history when they enter our exhibits because that history comes to life. These incredibly intelligent students are developing ways to make those experiences come to life with sound, smells, and technology,” said Museum Executive Director Bambi Bowden.
In addition to the EAST students, the museum is collaborating with the school’s art students. Under the guidance of teacher Ericka Watson, students are transforming the ramp leading from the history museum to the art gallery into a Young Artists Gallery. “We want this space to come to life with energy and color and art that is student led and student created because these young people are the future of our community,” Bowden said.
The museum is also supporting local elementary teachers by providing historic photos and information to enhance history units focused on the community’s past.
