Arrie Goforth Elementary School in Norfork is among ten schools across Arkansas chosen to participate in the 2025 Shade Trees on Playgrounds (STOP) program, offered by the Arkansas Department of Agriculture.

The program gives students hands-on experience planting and caring for trees while learning about the important role trees play in their communities. Participating schools receive up to five native shade trees, along with mulch, watering supplies, and planting guidance. Students and staff will also attend a virtual workshop, hold a tree-planting ceremony, and commit to caring for the trees long-term.

Kristine Kimbro, Urban & Community Forestry Program Coordinator, said, “We’re excited to see these schools create lasting benefits for both students and their playgrounds.” Department staff will help transport and plant the trees, making sure each one is suited to the playground’s conditions.
