City and county officials are considering a request for the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) to conduct a traffic study at the intersection of Hackler Road and Arkansas Highway 178, following growing concerns about safety and congestion near Mountain Home schools.

KTLO News spoke with District 3 State Representative Stetson Painter, who gives details on the possibility of a traffic study.

The intersection serves as a key access point for Mountain Home High School and Hackler Intermediate, where vehicle and bus traffic is heavy during school hours. Residents have reported difficulty turning onto Highway 178 during peak times.

There’s been talk for years about installing a traffic light, but officials have hesitated because traffic typically drops off when school is not in session.

The intersection has seen increased traffic in recent years due to residential growth and higher student volumes in the area. If approved, ARDOT would gather data on vehicle counts, turning movements and traffic patterns before making recommendations to local leaders. No timeline has been set for when the study could begin.
