Baxter County Coroner Bradley Hays announced he will not seek re-election in the 2026 primary election, ending more than a decade in the role and nearly 30 years of public service.

Hays, who has served as county coroner for 11 years, said in a statement that the decision was not made lightly and comes after receiving what he called an “exceptional opportunity” for himself and his family.

“Serving this community for the last 18 years has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Hays said. “After careful consideration, thought, and much prayer, I have decided to accept the opportunity.”

During his tenure, Hays said the Coroner’s Office made significant advancements, including improved investigative procedures and greater transparency and public outreach. He credited his staff and colleagues for their dedication to the mission of serving Baxter County families with compassion and professionalism.

Hays said while he will be stepping away from his official duties, he plans to continue serving the community in other ways.

“It has truly been the honor of a lifetime,” he said.
