The National Park Service plans to conduct prescribed fire operations in the Buffalo Point area of Buffalo National River between November 2025 and early spring 2026, as weather and conditions allow.
The work covers three areas totaling nearly 1,500 acres, including the Buffalo Point Maintenance, Lower Buffalo District Historic CCC Cabins, and Mull units. Officials say the burns will reduce hazardous fuels, protect nearby communities, and maintain fire-adapted ecosystems.
“Fire is a natural process that has shaped the Ozark landscape for thousands of years,” said Fenn Wimberly, the park’s fire management officer. “By using prescribed fire in a carefully planned and controlled way, we can reduce wildfire risk and protect communities.”
Located in Marion County, Buffalo Point includes historic Civilian Conservation Corps structures, modern park facilities, and popular recreation areas. Burns will help protect cabins, campgrounds, trails, and roads near State Highways 268 and 14, improving safety and visibility.
Beginning Nov. 17, the Buffalo Point Campground will offer primitive camping only to limit visitor impacts. Some temporary trail and road closures are expected.
