Emergency crews responded to a report of a fully engulfed structure fire on December 14 on County Road 74 near Calico Rock, with initial information indicating it was unknown whether occupants were inside the home.

Upon arrival, firefighters were still working to extinguish the blaze. A male occupant, identified as Mark Fidler, was located in an ambulance being treated for exposure and attempting to warm up. Fidler said he noticed smoke coming from the attic and attempted to extinguish the fire with a hose but was unsuccessful. He believed the fire may have started near a wood-burning stove.

Fidler and his wife, Sarah, were able to escape the residence along with their five dogs. No serious injuries were reported, but the home was declared a total loss.
