The Batesville Police Department began investigating the case on Dec. 30 after administrators at The Springs of Batesville Nursing Home, located at 175 White Drive, reported the alleged thefts.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the nursing home conducted an internal audit after an employee raised concerns about improper handling of medications. The facility’s administrator reported that required two-step medication signature procedures were not consistently followed.
The audit determined that approximately 757 prescription pills were missing. The unaccounted medications included tramadol, hydrocodone, oxycodone and morphine.
Investigators were told the suspected thefts were believed to have been committed by Shaw due to her direct access to medications and the presence of her signature on all documentation associated with the missing drugs.
On Jan. 5, Shaw agreed to an interview at the Batesville Police Department. After being advised of her rights, she reportedly admitted to an addiction to pain pills and acknowledged being terminated from her position for stealing narcotics from the facility. Court documents indicate Shaw had been employed at the nursing home since March 2025.
According to the affidavit, Shaw admitted she would sign out medications from nurses under her supervision, store them in a filing cabinet in her office, and later retrieve them when unobserved. She also admitted to consuming the medications at work and taking them home, stating she could not recall how many times the acts occurred.
Investigators said documentation provided by the nursing home showed 32 incidents of missing medications involving 25 different patients between April 28 and Dec. 17.
Shaw is currently free on a $10,000 bond and is awaiting her next court appearance.
