An arrest was made last week in the case of a young Missouri man following a high speed chase that ended in a rollover on Highway 5 South in late November 2025.19-year-old Gary Wayne Sterling II of Ste Genevieve, MO was booked into the Baxter County Jail on Thursday last week for multiple charges for the incident dating back to November 26, 2025.

According to the probable cause affidavit the pursuit began after Sterling’s vehicle was observed by a Baxter County Sheriff’s Deputy with a headlight out, and after the deputy began to turn around to pursue, Sterling’s vehicle began traveling at speeds beyond 100 mph and passed another car on a double yellow line. Unable to maintain control of the vehicle Sterling crashed and was ejected from the vehicle suffering serious injuries, including a broken arm, a broken pinky, and multiple fractures in his left hand.

Alcohol was found in the vehicle, and a portable breath test showed a blood alcohol level of 0.05. The legal limit in Arkansas is a level of 0.08. Sterling told authorities at the time that his accelerator had gotten stuck and he had to use his emergency brake to stop the vehicle.

Due to the severity of his injuries at the time he was not arrested and instead taken by ambulance to the hospital for medical treatment.

Sterling is charged with felony fleeing, speeding more than 15 mph over the limit, reckless driving, failure to maintain control, driving under the influence, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, no seatbelt and defective headlamp. Bond for his charges was set at $5,000. Sterling posted bond and was released Thursday shortly after being booked.

Sterling is scheduled to appear before the Baxter County Circuit on March 30 for his first court date.
