A Mountain Home man is free on bond after authorities say he punched a paramedic in the face during a response to a possible overdose Sunday.

Baxter County deputies were called to a residence on Buzzard Roost Road on Sunday for a reported overdose. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with 36-year-old Daniel Rice, who was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle. When asked what drug he had taken, Rice said a large amount of Narcan.

Deputies say Rice appeared agitated and tense. While a Baxter Health paramedic attempted to evaluate him, Rice struck the medic in the face with a closed fist.

Deputies attempted to place Rice under arrest, but authorities say he resisted by clenching his fists, pinning his arms under his torso, and wedging himself under the steering wheel. Medical personnel on scene assisted in restraining him.

Once in handcuffs, deputies say a medical evaluation revealed Rice’s eyes were dilated. Paramedics declined to transport him due to his combative behavior and no immediate medical concern being identified.

Rice was transported to the Baxter County Detention Center, where he was placed in a restraint chair upon arrival. Deputies also noted what appeared to be marks on his left arm consistent with intravenous drug use. He has since been released on $5,000 bond.
