Most political yard signs tied to the 2026 primary election must be removed by Sunday, March 8, under a City of Mountain Home ordinance outlining rules for the signs.

The ordinance allows residents to display political yard signs up to 60 days before an election but requires they be removed within five days after the election.

An exception applies to candidates advancing to a March 31 primary runoff. Those candidates may keep their signs up through the runoff and will have until April 5 to remove them.

Three candidates are seeking the Republican nomination for Baxter County sheriff. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two will advance to the March 31 runoff.

Residents who leave political signs up past the deadline could face a $25 fine for each day the sign remains displayed. The ordinance places responsibility on homeowners for removing signs on their property.

“When we updated the ordinance last year, the idea was that the homeowner had the final say on what was or wasn’t on display in his or her yard, not the candidate themselves,” Mountain Home City Clerk Scott Liles said. “So, if the sign is in your yard, you are ultimately responsible for its timely removal.”

Yard signs for the November general election may be displayed beginning Sept. 4. The general election will be held Nov. 3, and signs must be removed by Nov. 8.

Residents with questions about the ordinance can contact the city clerk’s office at 870-425-5943.
