Cotton, Love win primaries; Secretary of State race headed to runoff

Arkansas voters decided several key statewide primaries Tuesday, with U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton easily winning the Republican nomination while the Secretary of State race will head to a runoff.

With more than 95 percent of votes counted, Cotton won the Republican primary for U.S. Senate with 230,204 votes (81.6%).

Micah Ashby received 26,085 votes (9.2%), and Jeb Little finished with 25,908 votes (9.2%).

On the Democratic side, Hallie Shoffner won the nomination with 101,520 votes (78.2%), defeating Ethan Dunbar, who received 28,291 votes (21.8%). Shoffner will face Cotton in the general election.

In the Democratic primary for governor, State Sen. Fred Love secured the nomination with 103,933 votes (81.0%), defeating Supha Xayprasith-Mays, who received 24,441 votes (19.0%). Love will challenge Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who was unopposed in the GOP primary.

The Republican primary for Secretary of State will move to a runoff election after no candidate received a majority of the vote.

Bryan Norris led with 91,497 votes (34.34%), followed by State Sen. Kim Hammer with 89,390 votes (33.55%), and Cathy Hardin Harrison with 85,552 votes (32.11%). The top two finishers, Norris and Hammer, will advance to the runoff.

In other statewide races, Cole Jester won the Republican nomination for Land Commissioner with 72 percent of the vote, defeating Christian Olson, who received 28 percent.

In the Arkansas Supreme Court Associate Justice race for Position 3, Justice Nick Bronni won reelection with 55 percent, defeating John Adams, who received 45 percent.

Several other statewide Republican officeholders, including Lt. Gov. Leslie Rutledge, Attorney General Tim Griffin, Auditor Dennis Milligan and Treasurer John Thurston, were unopposed in their primaries.
