Proposed changes to Mountain Home’s zoning code were introduced Thursday evening during the City Council meeting at City Hall, beginning what will likely be several weeks of discussion before a final vote.
Clay Strain presented the ordinance for its first reading, outlining a plan to restructure the city’s C-2 commercial zoning classification. The proposal would divide the existing category into multiple levels of commercial zoning based on the intensity of business activity.
City officials say the new system would distinguish between light-, medium- and heavy-use commercial development, helping guide where certain types of businesses are located throughout the city. Factors such as traffic levels, noise and lighting would play a role in determining the classification.
Under the proposal, properties currently zoned C-2 would not automatically change. Instead, the new classifications would only apply when a property changes use, such as when a business closes and another moves in or when a building is remodeled for a different type of operation.
Council members are expected to review the ordinance again during the March 19 council meeting, with a potential final vote scheduled for April 2.
In other action Thursday night, the council approved the purchase of a water tanker truck for the city’s street department and authorized the sale of a 2011 Vactor truck for $55,000.
Council members also voted to appoint Noah Strout to the Mountain Home Advertising and Promotion Commission.
The meeting also included a quarterly update from the North Central Arkansas Economic Alliance, which highlighted plans for the upcoming Draft Day workforce event on April 2. The event is designed to connect local students with employers as part of broader efforts to strengthen the region’s workforce pipeline.
