The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office has arrested one of its own deputies following an incident Saturday evening.
According to officials, Deputy Rondey Smith was taken into custody while on duty on a charge of public intoxication.
Smith was immediately relieved of his badge and firearm and placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office said, “Situations like this are difficult for both the department and the community, but accountability and the rule of law apply to everyone.”
Officials say the investigation is ongoing and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
