A dedication ceremony officially renaming the prison at Calico Rock to the Benny Magness Unit was hosted Friday afternoon by the Arkansas Department of Correction (ADC).
More than 100 people attended, including Mr. Magness, his family, prison wardens, state representatives, state officials, local judges and sheriffs, and past and present Board of Correction members. A lunch was provided along with nearly an hour of speeches highlighting the legacy Magness leaves on the state following his retirement in late December 2025.
Former State Representative Jack Fortner said, “I am a better man for the years I have known you.” State Representative Jason Nazarenko added, “I would not be who I am today without Benny.” ADC Secretary Lindsay Wallace said, “A strong correction system depends on the strength of those within it,” going on to credit Magness with much of that strength.

Presentations included a framed aerial photo of the prison and a large shield bearing the Department of Correction insignia. “A lasting reminder of your dedication to the people of Arkansas,” said Dr. Dubs Byers, retired Superintendent of Correctional Schools. A ribbon cutting in front of the new entrance sign was held outdoors on the prison grounds.
